Iran Produces Over 15.5mln Tons of Sponge Iron in H1
TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organization (IMIDRO) announced that 15,568,069 tons of sponge iron has been produced in the country during the first half of the current Iranian year (March20- September21).
IMIDRO said that 15,568,069 tons of sponge iron was produced in the first six months of the current Iranian calendar year, showing an 8% rise compared to the corresponding period last year.
The report added that 2,681,177 tons of sponge iron was produced in the month of Shahrivar (August22- September21), setting a 12% growth compared to the same period last year.
Nearly 3,892,708 tons of sponge iron was produced at Esfahan’s Mobarakeh Steel Company (EMSCO), recording a 5% growth in comparison with the same period last year.
The World Steel Association announced in August that Iran was able to overtake India to become the world's largest producer of sponge iron by direct reduction in May 2020.
Also in the first five months of 2020, Iran has produced an additional 12 million tons of sponge iron, while India produced 11 million tons.
Sponge iron production in the world reached 32.1 million tons by June 22 this year. India, Egypt, Mexico, and Saudi Arabia are ranked after Iran.
