Commander: 55,000 Basij Bases Ready to Screen Iranian People for Coronavirus
TEHRAN (FNA)- Commander of Basij (volunteer) forces Brigadier General Gholamreza Soleimani announced preparedness of 55,000 Basij bases to help the health ministry in screening Iranian people across the country for coronavirus infection.
“A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed under the supervision of the Health Ministry to implement a complementary plan to combat the coronavirus, the most important feature of which is to be neighborhood-based and home-based, and groups will be deployed in neighborhoods, and the identification and screening of patients will be conducted with the support of 55,000 Basij bases,” General Soleimani told reporters in a press conference in Tehran on Monday on the occasion of Basij week.
He referred to the past activities of Basij forces in fighting the coronavirus, and said Basij has screened more than 70 million people under the supervision of the Health Ministry so far.

General Soleimani added that despite some problems in the first days of the coronavirus outbreak, Basij has been able to produce more than 17mln masks at workshops across the country per day.
Iranian Minister of Health Saeed Namaki had in April praised the Basij Force for assisting the medical society in the battle against coronavirus.
In a letter to General Soleimani at the time, the health minister expressed his gratitude to the volunteer forces for their close cooperation with the medical staff and contribution to the national mobilization plan for the fight against COVID-19.
He asked the Basij Force to stand with the medical society on the path fraught with difficulties.
