Aidan Jonah: Mainstream Media Upholding Western Imperialist Aims
TEHRAN (FNA)- Aidan Jonah, Canadian journalist, says the propaganda arm of the mainstream media empowers the Western governments to practice imperialism abroad, and colonialism at home.
Speaking in an interview with FNA, Aidan Jonah said, "These outlets are funded by rich elites and mega-corporations, whose interests firmly lie in maintaining the reactionary right, and avoiding a serious challenge to the capitalist economic system… Actions such as cutting of CGTN’s UK license and targeting Press TV showcase how there is only “democracy” until you challenge the interests of the elites in charge of maintain the status quo… While disgusting, it is inherently logical for capitalist elites to target outlets which challenge the status quo, and attempt to crush them by any means necessary."
Aidan Jonah is a journalist and radio host based in Canada. He is the founder and editor-in-chief of the Canada Files, an anti-imperialist publication focusing on Canadian foreign policy. Jonah’s articles on imperialism, federal politics and left-wing resistance to colonialism have been published by Canadian Dimension, Palestine Chronicle, the Orinoco Tribune, Dissident Voice and many other outlets.

Q: Why is that the case that the US mainstream media ties the US election to democratic values, despite US president’s outcry that the recent election was a fraud; at the same time, the MSM calls popular votes elsewhere a fraud?
A: The core motivation of the North American mainstream media is to uphold the imperialist aims of their respective governments. The MSM only cares about the damage that false claims of election fraud cause when it occurs at home, because they view the people of foreign countries as inherently inhuman. Imperialism abroad, and colonialism at home could not continue to function without the media acting as the state’s propaganda arm.
Capitalists view the Latin American countries as being only useful for exploitation and raising of their profits. This logic drives the targeting of Indigenous land defenders, along with anti-colonial and anti-imperialist movements in countries subservient to North America. The media wilfully ignores these events, as they are inconvenient realities which may lead a reader to begin questioning the imperialist foreign policy of North American governments.
Q: While the world witnessed Trump’s inciting violence in the US Capitol riot, still there are many news outlets defending or even idolizing him. What is their agenda?
A: Their agenda is a blind allegiance to Trump, and a reactionary push to defend capitalism against politicians who they wrongly claim are radical socialists (neoliberals such as Joe Biden and Nancy Pelosi.) The right-wing media works to put the anger at declining economic conditions, poor job opportunities, and rampant exploitation of the working class, onto immigrants and foreign countries. This happens because these outlets are funded by rich elites and mega-corporations, whose interests firmly lie in maintaining the reactionary right, and avoiding a serious challenge to the capitalist economic system.
This can be shown by the rise of NewsMax and OANN, extremist right news networks which refused to acknowledge Donald Trump’s loss in the 2020 presidential election. As a result of this stance, and Fox News’ acknowledgement of Biden’s election win, many viewers and advertisers have gone over to these two networks.
Q: China’s CGTN’s license to broadcast in the UK was revoked by OFCOM. The same was practiced to Iran’s Press TV some 10 years ago. Why is it the case that the pro-Trump outlets keep running, but the alternative media from the other side of the world are silenced?
A: While the West claims superiority over the rest of the world due to their “liberal democracy”, actions such as cutting of CGTN’s UK license and targeting Press TV showcase how there is only “democracy” until you challenge the interests of the elites in charge of maintain the status quo. Capitalist elites view the left media as a greater threat than right-wing media, because right extremists are inherently reactionary protectors of capitalism, while the left wing seeks to dismantle the exploitative capitalist system North Americans such as myself live in. As a result, while disgusting, it is inherently logical for capitalist elites to target outlets which challenge the status quo, and attempt to crush them by any means necessary.
China has every right to strike back against this move, and is brave to pull BBC World News, which has pushed relentless and baseless propaganda against China, off the air.
