Ian Williams: Racism Part of UK Royal Family’s Elitism

TEHRAN (FNA)- Ian Williams, British journalist, says racism is institutionalized in the Britain’s royal family as part of their routine to keep distance with the British public.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with FNA, Williams said, “Their snobbishness and feudal privileges are a message to working class people as well as people of color in the UK. I am sure that the family does have almost instinctive racial prejudice, but it was probably less because Meghan was American. Can you imagine if she were the daughter of a London bus driver - or, heaven forbid, of Caribbean origins as well!”

Ian Williams is an author and journalist. He has written for newspapers and magazines around the world, ranging from the Australian to The Independent, the New York Observer, the Village Voice to the Financial Times. He is the UN correspondent for Tribune, and senior analyst for Foreign Policy in Focus. He has pundited on BBC, CNN, MSNBC, FOX, CBC and innumerable radio stations.

Below is the full text of the interview:

Q: How concerning and serious are the UK royal family’s racism raised by Harry and Meghan in their televised interview? What does it reflect about racism in the UK society?

A: Personally, I would say that the elitism of the Royal Family affects far more people and that the racism is part of that. Their snobbishness and feudal privileges are a message to working class people as well as people of color in the UK. I am sure that the family does have almost instinctive racial prejudice, but it was probably less because Meghan was American. Can you imagine if she were the daughter of a London bus driver - or, heaven forbid, of Caribbean origins as well!

Q: Meghan said royal life caused her suicidal thoughts. How could that be the case?

A: It would have been like living in a cult that made it plain that you were not the real thing, not really part. That is how cults work… they isolate you from friends and family, restrict your freedom of movement. Scandinavian royals I gather can pop on their bikes and go for ride. Not the British.

Q: An American media outlet dared to reveal the royal family’s affairs in an interview with family’s members. Why did not it happen before by British mainstream media?

A: It is a love-hate relationship. The British media are the slimiest most sensational in the world. They revere the institution but regard anyone of them who steps out of line as fair game for the most atrocious lies and attacks. She was American, of some black ancestry and had her own views, so of course they reviled her - seemingly with assistance and encouragement from people in the institution.
