Jeries Bassier: Washington Backing Palestinians’ Eviction from Sheikh Jarrah

TEHRAN (FNA)- Jeries Bassier, Palestinian journalist, says the US Administration is supporting the American holdings which obtain unlawful Israeli eviction verdicts against Palestinians in Sheikh Jarrah for settlement constructions.

Speaking in an interview with FNA, Bassier said, “As for the official position of the British and American government, ‘Jerusalem is a conflict zone’, but this does not prevent American companies from contracting to work in these areas. They profit from this conflict, and the states are interested in corporate interests.”

Jeries Bassier is a Palestinian freelance journalist based in al-Quds.

Below is the full text of the interview:

Q: If Sheikh Jarrah is in the East occupied Jerusalem al-Quds, why are Palestinians facing eviction verdicts?

A: During the 1948 Nakba, Palestinian families were displaced from their homes; in the year 1956 an agreement was set between the Jordanian government and UNRWA to allow these families to live in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood.

In the beginning of the 70s, this UN decision was undermined as a new Israeli law “allowed Jews to claim the property they owned before 1948”, allowing the settlement communities' attempts to regain ownership of these lands with a pretext “it was inhabited by Jewish families before the Nakba.”

The problem now is the absence of the documents which permit Palestinian residents to have permanent ownership of the area. These papers have not been provided to the Palestinian residents by the Jordanian government.

Q: American holdings own companies which represent settlers looking to build settlements in Sheikh Jarrah. Why does not Washington force the private companies to obey the international law, and stop building settlements in the occupied East Jerusalem?

A: The main problem is between the Palestinians who live in the area, and the settlement communities about the eligibility and ownership of the place. As for the official position of the British and American government, “Jerusalem is a conflict zone”, but this does not prevent American companies from contracting to work in these areas. They profit from this conflict, and the states are interested in corporate interests.

Q: Palestinians who protest Israel’s Sheikh Jarrah and al-Aqsa violence were faced with a mixture of Israeli forces’ violence and vigilante-style attacks from Jewish settler radicals. Why are far-right Israelis allowed to arm themselves and attack Palestinians?

A: Violence generates greater violence, especially when one of the parties is missing to defend a truth or to defend oneself and faces the police and the army in addition to the settlers from the extreme right who are protected by the Israeli forces, even if they are the party to start the conflict. This constitutes a kind of insecurity and confidence in the police and security organizations whose goal is only to protect one party, even if it starts to attack.
