Yhamir Chabur: US Cuba Sanctions Violating International Law

TEHRAN (FNA)- Yhamir Chabur, journalist and activist, says Washington’s unilateral sanctions against Havana are in breach of the UN resolutions which long demand removal of the embargo.

Speaking in an interview with FNA, Chabur said, “The US has never voted on or sought international approval for these sanctions, before first imposing them on the island-nation in 1962. Vice versa, there has always been a vote every year on lifting these sanctions within the UN – which this year over 184 countries voted to end the US-imposed blockade on Cuba, while 2 countries (the US and Israel) voted in favor of maintaining the blockade.”

“Washington’s decades-long unconventional war against Havana will never end, regardless of who is the president in the Oval office, because Cuba maintains herself unapologetically a pro worker-farmer state and demonstrates that another world is possible away from their international neoliberal economic model”, he added.

Yhamir Chabur is a radio host, political activist and columnist with Anticonquista, a Latin American solidarity group in the US.

Below is the full text of the interview:

Q: How do you find the US’ fresh sanctions on Cuba, right after the protests in July?

A: These new rounds of sanctions on Cuba by the Biden Administration are a reaction towards the growing skepticism amongst the population in the US and Cuban-Americans (including opponents of socialism and the Cuban government) on US foreign policy on the island nation. For the last couple of months there has been a movement of Cuban-Americans and US citizens that have come out in protest in the form of car caravans, in order to urge the Biden Administration to lift the 243 coercive measures that were imposed by the Trump Administration and to return to the normal relations, which started under the Obama Administration. The US government is taking advantage of the misinformation that Americans are receiving from bourgeois media and are gambling on the image of young Afro-Cuban protesters like the CIA-backed rappers from the collective San Isidro, to get away with imposing additional sanctions.

Q: Joe Biden, the US President, pledged to reconsider Trump-era sanctions against Cuba during his election campaign. Why does he act opposite?

A: Washington’s decades-long unconventional war against Havana will never end, regardless of who the president is in the Oval office, because Cuba maintains herself unapologetically a pro worker-farmer state and demonstrates that another world is possible away from their international neoliberal economic model. The Cuba government with the little resources at their disposal, has been able to re-organize its wealth and consolidate their people’s basic human right in health and education, and as well has been able to extend these humanistic qualities to the world, through their international medical brigade, which have been essential in fighting the Covid-19 pandemic worldwide. This type of social humanistic organization infuriates Washington because 90 miles away from it is shores, there is a Caribbean island predominantly of African descendants forging their own version of socialism, and has aspirations to recolonize island using their puppets in Miami to rule it under their hegemonic corporate interest.

Q: Numerous resolutions by the United Nations General Assembly have demanded removal of US’ economic blockade of Cuba. Why is Washington negligent to the UN resolution?

A: These sanctions are considered illegal by UN international law because for a country to be legally sanctioned by another country, it must be voted on and approved by the United Nations Security Council. In the case of the blockade on Cuba, the US has never voted on or sought international approval for these sanctions, before first imposing them on the island-nation in 1962. Vice versa, there has always been a vote every year on lifting these sanctions within the UN – which this year over 184 countries voted to end the US-imposed blockade on Cuba, while 2 countries (the US and Israel) voted in favor of maintaining the blockade; ignoring these regulations by UN when it comes to the legality of these sanctions on Cuba demonstrates how the US are far removed from the myth of the supposed democratic beacon of the Western world, and are in reality violators of international law.
