Navy Commander: China, Russia Ready for Joint Drills with Iran

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Navy Commander Rear Admiral Shahram Irani said that China and Russia have responded positively to Iran’s demand to hold joint naval wargames.

Iranian Navy carries out annual maneuvers and “we will also hold drills this year", Rear Admiral Irani said.

"We have invited different countries to take part in the drills, and Russia and China have so far voiced their readiness to do so," he added.

The commander noted that different units of Iran's Armed Forces take part in joint maneuvers with other countries.

Russian Ambassador to Tehran Levan Dzhagaryan said in August that Iran, Russia and China will hold joint maritime exercises – dubbed CHIRU – in the Persian Gulf around late 2021 or early 2022, to ensure international shipping safety and combat piracy.

"At the end of this year or the beginning of the next year, the annual joint naval exercises, CHIRU, will be held in the Persian Gulf region. Russian, Iranian and Chinese warships are taking part in it. The main aim is to practice actions on ensuring international shipping safety, and combating sea pirates," Dzhagaryan said.

Late in December 2019, Iran, Russia and China staged four-day joint maritime exercises in the Indian Ocean and the Sea of Oman area.

The drills, dubbed the ‘Marine Security Belt’ exercise, covered 17,000 square kilometers and consisted of various tactical exercises such as target practicing and rescuing ships from assault and incidents such as fires.

Rear Admiral Irani also said that the regional states are capable of providing security in the region and there is no need for the presence of others.

He announced Iran's readiness for training interactions and technical cooperation with all friendly countries.

Rear Admiral Irani also asked the guests to convey Iran's message of peace and friendship to the military commanders of their countries.

"In an effort to develop and rebuild the nation, we joined hands with the IRGC Navy Force and established maritime security and fought against piracy and maritime terrorism to secure Iran's economy," he noted.

Referring to the oppressive sanctions on the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Navy commander stated, "Despite sanctions, we have localized repairing naval equipment and we have progressed so much that we have designed and built our submarines and ships."

Rear Admiral Irani had on Saturday said that the sanctions imposed by enemies against the country had failed to impede progress of naval forces in developing different weapons and military systems.

Today, lifting or imposing sanctions in the military field has no value for Iranian people, Rear Admiral Irani told reporters in a press conference on the occasion of Navy Day in Iran.

He pointed to the salient achievements of the Navy, and said that Iran’s Navy Force is shining like a gem in the Persian Gulf region.

Apart from carrying out its maritime operation from Strait of Hormuz to North Persian Gulf, today, Iran’s Navy is carrying out very vital and sensitive operations in the depth of the Indian Ocean and the Red Sea and has shown excellent maritime operation in line with bringing about security for the entire region and the world, he emphasized.

In response to a question on the impacts of sanctions on defense industries, Iran’s top navy commander said that benefitted from high potentials and capabilities, sanctions imposed against the country have not had any impact on Iran’s Navy Force.

He then pointed to the joint Zolfaqar-1400 drill recently held in the country, and said that Iran’s Navy managed to gain salient achievements in the drills in maritime sector successfully.

Rear Admiral Irani said that the Navy is an equipment-oriented, scientific-, political-, military- and international force, and stressed, “Accordingly, Iran’s Navy will unveil the most modern maritime equipment in the very near future in line with meeting the domestic demands and thwarting the future threats against the country.”

Regarding the capability of Iran Navy in producing advanced maritime equipment, he stated, “We will produce all kinds of maritime equipment and construction operations of Besat heavy submarine will start soon."
