Iran's Top Diplomat: Lasting Deal Requires Mutual Understanding

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian announced the country's preparedness to hold a new round of talks with the world powers on the removal of sanctions to achieve a "lasting and strong" agreement, but underlined that an agreement is possible only when Washington shows understanding and interest.

"An agreement is possible only based on mutual understanding and interests," Amir Abdollahian wrote on his twitter page after a phone call with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell late on Tuesday.

"We remain ready to negotiate a strong and durable agreement," he added.

"The US must decide if it wants a deal or insists on sticking to its unilateral demands. Mutually exclusive," Amir Abdollahian said.

Meantime, Borrell wrote on his twitter page that he held a phone call with the top Iranian diplomat, and stressed the need to conclude the JCPOA revival talks.

"If we want to conclude an agreement, decisions are needed now," he added.

Iran and the five remaining parties to the multilateral deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), have held several rounds of negotiations in the Austrian capital of Vienna since April last year to restore the agreement, which was unilaterally abandoned by former US President Donald Trump in May 2018.

In quitting the agreement, Trump restored sanctions on Iran as part of what he called the “maximum pressure” campaign against the country. Those sanctions are being enforced to this day by the Joe Biden administration, even though it has repeatedly acknowledged that the policy has been a mistake and a failure.

EU Deputy Foreign Policy Chief Enrique Mora coordinated the indirect negotiations between Iran and the US in Doha in late June aimed at resolving the differences hindering the revival of the 2015 nuclear deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan Of Action, JCPOA.

Amir Abdollahian said on Friday that the JCPOA revival talks can succeed if the US acts realistically and provides Tehran with robust guarantees that it will be able to fully reap the economic benefits of the deal.
