Tehran Reminds Berlin of Complicity in War Crimes Against Iranian Civilians During 1980s Imposed War

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nasser Kana'ani slammed Germany's interference in Iran's internal affairs, and censured Berlin's complicity in the chemical attacks conducted by the regime of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein against civilians in Sardasht in Northwestern Iran.

"It is unlikely that the German Foreign Minister [Annalena Baerbock] is unaware of the Iranian people’s attitude to chemical agents and their ties to the German government," Kana'ano wrote on Twitter on Tuesday.

"How can she, whose government is responsible for arming the Saddam regime with chemical weapons and the poisoning and martyrdom of thousands of Iranian citizens, see herself entitled to talk bout the human rights of the Iranian people?" the senior official asked, recounting Berlin’s complicity in the war crimes committed by the regime of ex-Iraqi dictator during the 1980s imposed war.

Tehran and certain Western nations have been engaged in a diplomatic row over their meddlesome stance on recent unrest Iran and Tehran's alleged role in the war between Russia and Ukraine.

Iranian officials blame Western countries for orchestrating the riots to destabilize the country. They have also stressed Tehran's opposition to the continuation of the war between Russia and Ukraine, and called for diplomacy as the sole way out of the crisis, dismissing Western allegations that Tehran-made combat drones have been employed against Kiev.

In 1987, Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein attacked Sardasht, West Azarbaijan, Northwestern Iran, with chemical weapons. Sardasht is the third city after Japan's Hiroshima and Nagasaki which became the target of Weapons of Mass Destruction in the world. Out of a population of 20,000, 25% are still suffering severe illnesses from the attacks.

Tens of thousands of Iranians were killed and wounded by chemical weapons during the 1980-1988 Iraqi imposed war on Iran. Around 100,000 Iranians are still living with the effects, which include long-term respiratory problems, eye and skin problems as well as immune system disorders, psychological disorders, genetic disorders, and probably cancers.

The footprints of arrogant countries were clearly seen in the humanitarian tragedy and its catastrophic consequences.

Iranian military experts and technicians have in recent years made substantial headway in manufacturing a broad range of indigenous equipment, making the armed forces self-sufficient in the military sphere. Iranian officials have repeatedly stressed that the country will never stop working to strengthen its military capabilities for defense purposes.
