Iranian Medical Academy Urges Lancet to Stop Ignoring Decades-Long Israeli Atrocities

TEHRAN (FNA)- President of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the Islamic Republic of Iran Dr. Alireza Marandi called on the Lancet Medical Journal to pay attention to the Israeli crimes against the Palestinian people in past decades across the occupied territories and the Gaza Strip, instead of denying realities and publishing false information about the Iranian health sector.

Dr. Marandi made the remarks in a letter to Editor-in-Chief of the medical journal Professor Richard Horton amidst Israeli total blockade and relentless bombardment of the besieged enclave and the forcible evacuation of Gazans.

The president of Iran’s Academy of Medical Sciences has recently criticized the magazine for publishing a story over the death of Mahsa Amini, and stressed that the report was run based on the material and political agendas.

While the medical magazine did not respond to that note, Dr. Marandi wrote another letter to Professor Horton, asking the journal to record the Israeli crimes against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

“Now that I am writing a second letter for the scientific medical journal Lancet, the world is witnessing the unprecedented crime of the racist settler apartheid regime against the defenseless people of Palestine,” the Iranian official said.

“I am writing this for you, which, unlike your undocumented article, is based on numerous documents and is completely verifiable. My evidence consists of hundreds of videos and written observations of thousands of people who have documented the crimes of this colonial regime against the Palestinian people over the years,” he added.

The former health minister listed some of the crimes of the Zionist regime that have been recorded in history, accusing the magazine of ignoring Israeli atrocities towards Palestinians over past decades.
“Not a single word has been written about these crimes against humanity in your magazine. However, there is no doubt that the scientists and people of Iran and the world will not forget these crimes,” Marandi stressed.

Based on last year's statistics, he reviewed some of the crimes of the Israeli regime:

1300 Palestinian villages destroyed since 1948.
800,000 people out of a population of 2.5 million displaced from Palestinian villages.
70 mass killings since the occupation (Sabra and Shatila, etc.).
More than 15,000 Palestinian martyrs since the occupation.
6.7 million Palestinian refugees across the world.
28.7 percent of Palestinian refugees live in 58 camps. 10 camps in Jordan, 9 camps in Syria, 12 camps in Lebanon, 19 camps in the West Bank, and 8 camps in the Gaza Strip.
2 thousand martyrs and 10 thousand wounded just in the 51-day war.

Now, “Gaza is under the complete siege of the apartheid regime, and children, women and defenseless people are continuously and blindly being bombed”, Marandi noted.

“Thousands of children, women, and men have been killed or injured. The regime has also cut off water and electricity, and the entry of any kind of aid, including food, medicine, and medical equipment, into Gaza is prohibited,” he stated.

“I hope Lancet medical magazine, by including my letter as the president of the Iranian Academy of Medical Sciences, will record this unique tragedy and crime of the century, which continues amidst the silence of the Western scientific and medical community. If you choose not publish, be sure that your indifference will be recorded in history,” Dr. Marandi concluded.

Gaza is one of the most densely populated places on Earth, where some 2 million people live in an area of 140 square miles. It has been almost completely cut off from the rest of the world for nearly 17 years. More than half of its population lives in poverty and is food insecure, with nearly 80% of its population relying on humanitarian assistance.

Israel has in recent days carried out heavy bombardment across the besieged enclave, killing more than 1,900 Palestinians, including hundreds of children, and wounding over 7,900 others. Israeli Defense Ministry Yoav Gallant has also ordered a "complete siege" of Gaza, saying he would halt its supply of electricity, food, water and fuel.

Tehran says the history of the apartheid regime is full of assassinations, massacre, torture and killing of Palestinian kids, and described Tel Aviv regime's atrocities and massacre of Palestinian women and children as indicative of the destitute of Zionists. Iranian officials say the Tel Aviv regime has been struggling for more than 70 years to exit its identity crisis which has been mixed with genocide, plunder, forced displacement and scores of other inhumane moves.
